Diana Burch: Still, Life...

Burch's new installation used woven heat treated plastic to explore the natural growth occurring in The SPACE. The web-like structure also suggested communities & histories, connecting & interconnecting as it developed. Several structures using lightweight materials explored the encroachment of wild plants across the uninhabited site.
On 9 & 10 September, Burch led 2 free drop-in workshops coordinated with Heritage Open Days theme 'Heritage and Nature'. Utilising various plastic materials, cable ties & plastic coated wire to create colourful elements which were added to 'Still, Life...'. The workshops were well attended by adults & children. As well as making objects, Burch & the participants discussed & explored the plants & insects inhabiting the site.

Tempo Arts is pleased to announce that they have received funding from Sussex Community Foundation to support the 2017/18 programme of artists' projects & related community engagement activities at The SPACE in St Leonards. The award will facilitate new work by artists from the area & help to deliver a range of participatory workshops/events which benefit the local community while enhancing the town's natural environment.
On 31 August, Christine Gist, a director of Tempo Arts attended the Sussex Community Champagne & Afternoon Cream Tea which was hosted by The High Sheriff of East Sussex, Mr Michael Chowen CBE DL & Sussex Community Foundation. This event celebrated those working for the community in Hastings & the surrounding area.

The final presentation of Jivko Darakchiev's film People Pebble took place at this artist-led in Brighton. To ensure young people had a voice in their community, the public engagement element invited local young carers from Brighton Carers Centre to participate in the project. Two young carers & their support worker were involved in 2 art & creative writing workshops led by Evlynn Sharp, Brighton based performance poet & dramatist. The artworks & writing they produced & presented at Gallery Lock In reflected on how they have adapted to changes in their lives.  

                        
 

Alternate Legacies
A selection of the photographs produced by Sharon Haward & Léonie Young featuring the objects & memorabilia from The Bridge workshop participants was exhibited in The Long Gallery, Hastings Museum & Art Gallery from 14 January-19 February 2017. 5,177 visitors had the opportunity to see the works & read the stories & memories associated with the photographs.

Seven large scale photo montages were installed on the outside of The Bridge Centre & a launch took place on 8 February. The photos will be visible to passers-by, local residents & Centre users throughout 2017. A selection of the photographs exhibited at the museum will be installed inside The Bridge Centre.

The commissioned film 'People Pebble by Jivko Darakchiev is presented alongside artworks created and chosen by customers at Coastal Enterprises, Worthing . Working with artist & poet Gary Goodman, the participants produced monoprints, self portraits & townscapes which reflected senses of place and belonging.

A special viewing was held on Saturday 21 January which gave guests an opportunity to see & discuss the work with Darakchiev & the Coastal Enterprise customers.
